The Japanese Secret to a Cozy Winter: The Kotatsu

A cozy Japanese kotatsu table in winter

Hi from Japan! Many Japanese homes don't have central heating, so we have our own clever way to stay warm: the kotatsu. It's a low table with a small heater underneath and a thick blanket on top. You slide your legs under it, and suddenly you never want to leave.

Kotatsu Heated Table

It's where Japanese families eat, chat, play games and nap all winter long. Because it only heats the small space under the blanket, it keeps you warm without heating the whole room.

How to Set Up Your Kotatsu

  1. Place the table on a rug or floor mat.
  2. Remove the tabletop and lay a thick blanket or comforter over the frame.
  3. Put the tabletop back on, so the blanket is held in place.
  4. Plug it in, turn the knob to low, and slide in.

Tip: the blanket is sold separately. A queen-size comforter you already have works well.
